“I believe in the value of the general public visiting studios to see how Indiana’s artists still live and work in traditional ways.” After working as a porcelain and stoneware clay potter for 30 years, Cheri Platter grew tired of lifting 50-pound bags of clay. She turned her attention to a medium of smaller scale - “precious metal clays." After taking classes, she began working fervently in silver and bronze clay. Cheri’s love of nature pervades her sculpted creations. Her pottery was painted with floral designs for over 25 years, relief sculptures of frogs, dragonflies adorned the Fairy Garden Totems and ferns and nature designs were worked into her clay sculpture kimonos and Asian dress forms. Now she takes leaves and presses them into the soft silver clay, hand forming and capturing flowing designs from nature with her pencil, transferring them into the precious metal clays. In this way, her love of her Brown County home is reflected as well. She lives in a log cabin nestled between two hills where life is simple, and she enjoys it immensely. Besides the beauty of Indiana, Cheri is inspired by the craft itself. “Like the process of pottery, there is always something different to be made, new techniques to try and tools to use,” Cheri says. “The process of precious metal clay is very similar and some methods are exactly the same as regular clay but in a smaller scale. This alone inspired me.” No longer working stoneware clay Cheri has turned her attentions to working her husband Dallas’s lamp work glass beads into jewelry, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, which are shown in their studio showroom. Cheri’s love of gardening still is evident around house and studio where she has created places to sit and contemplate the next series of art she will take from the nature around her and see the fairies at work. |
